The Honolulu Experience

No, this is not me teasing you about my last vacation experience. This is Microsoft’s latest effort at making servers more manageable.

The Honolulu project, currently in technical preview, is a revolutionary web based management tool that is meant to replace tools like Server Manager, Regedit, and many more.

Honolulu can be installed directly on your Windows 10 workstation or on a dedicated gateway server. Either way you connect to it using a web browser, Edge works perfectly. It does not require IIS, Silverlight, or a target component. Just Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.1 which is included with Windows Server 2016.

Out of the box it can manage Windows Servers replacing the majority of common tools most importantly ones that are not available in Server Core or nano. It can also manage Failover Clusters and Hyper Converged Clusters.

There is also an Extension Manager where you should be able to expand the capabilities of Honolulu using nuget packages.

I find Honolulu to be a critical piece of the puzzle towards faster adoption of Core and nano servers. It is a fast and effective replacement for management tools that currently influence many IT Admins to favor the full GUI to ensure easier manageability of servers.

The tools that Honolulu replaces so far are as follows,

  • Failover Cluster Manager
  • Server Manager
  • Task Manager
  • Certificate Manager: With a very useful overview of expiring and expired certificates and filtered logs for certificate related events.
  • Device Manager: You can search, view driver details, and disable devices.
  • Event Viewer
  • File Explorer: Capable of uploading and downloading single files. Click here to vote for complete folder uploads and downloads.
  • Windows Firewall
  • Local Users and Groups Manager
  • Network Connections: ncpa.cpl
  • Regedit
  • Service Manager
  • Disk Manager
  • Hyper-V Manager
  • Windows Update: Can manage Available Updates and view the history

Go ahead and review the official documentation and give Honolulu a spin today!

Cheers.
